The Bubble Man!
11 January 2011
When I arrived that Monday afternoon he was standing along his car near the shoreline at Green Lake. His purple-dyed beard matches the purple embellished van in which he commutes daily. His name is Garry Golightly and he's performed in over 43 countries.
With a full studio in his house, Golightly basks in making bubble poetry, large bubble wands, and practicing "bubbleosophy."
It was like plastic Dale Chihuly. Recycled six-pack rings constructed into lavish chandeliers and 6-foot bubble-wands are just a few of his creations.
"And this is what it does!" He says pointing to the tattered 90s Polaroid. A joyful snapshot of Golightly grinning as he waved his bubble-wand for a crowd. The bubbles spread behind him like rainbow-colored scales.
The beaming bubbleman doesn't just perform with bubbles, but he also lives by them. "There's nothing to sphere, but sphere itself," Golightly said chuckling. "The ultimate bubble is the world. It's a bubbleosophy," he exclaimed. His jolly exuded from his laugh.
Like a canon ready to explode, Golightly was ecstatic to share his thoughts:
"People are different shapes, colors and sizes, just like bubbles. Some of us last longer than other, just like bubbles. We all come from the same source, just like bubbles."
"I am neither a feminine male, and i'm not a macho guy." Golightly said. "I'm in the middle. That represents my androgyny." Although he wears a gold band on his ring finger, Golightly isn't married.
"I made a choice. I was either going to have a nuclear family with children of my own, or the world's family would be my children," he said smiling.
His passion for this bubble theory was contagious as he held my gaze and explained: "All people come from love, because only love exists. When we don't know we come from love, we fall in love. When we realize we come from love, we rise in love, just like bubbles."
Golightly performs at Carkeek Park almost daily between 2 and p.m. and performs for private parties occasionally. With his own website and business cards, accessing the bubbleman is quite simple.
Golightly's unique and buoyant aroma trigger exuberant childhood feelings. Light as a bubble, I asked him to perform for me. He answered, "Abso-bubble-utely!"
